24 May 2010Just had to say that I'm having way too much fun doing this, and we need to start doing them more often.
My though process since we started:
1. "I'm going to make something that is completely awesome! Heck yeah! Time to think of an idea!"
2. "Nice! Got a sweet idea! This is going to be so badass!"
3. "Hmmm, this is harder than I thought, better stick to something simple then improve if I have time."
4. "Wow, I have no idea what I'm doing, let's get down to the basics..."
5. "Grr.."
6. "I'll be lucky if my image doesn't come out looking like it made by an eight year old kid in art class. But this is really fun!"
Should have a WIP to post tonight. -

But consider this. Picture your finished scene in your head. Then brake it down, identify your lightsources and mood you want to achive and start placing lights around and see how it goes. Thats how I do it

25 May 2010The difficulty I'm having is how to put this in some sort of environment...I spent hours yesterday searching for an image to use as a backdrop or some sort of street scene I could incorporate it into, but I never found anything I was real happy with. In the end I think I'm going to not use anything like that and just go with some primitive background elements instead of going for something more realistic, then focus on the basics from there.

25 May 2010I'll give that a try, though I can't see finding an image to match my lighting when I can't find one to match any lighting whatsoever haha. Maybe I'm just too picky.

13 Jun 2010Finally got a first pass worth sharing. I really don't have an eye for lighting so I'd love to get some opinions on any real obvious stuff I'm missing, or stuff that could use work!
No post or anything so I think the overall mood I'm going for isn't really present yet, kind of a technical pass still.

14 Jun 2010Thanks Josh! I agree about the flatness. Not sure what to do though...we'll see.
I've got an updated version.
-Adjusted green metal material to show more spec.
-Changed texture of concrete base.
-Added some very basic ambient occlusion that I played around with in post.
-Adjusted global lighting
What I'm going for with this is I'm treating it like a photograph. I don't have much experience with lighting and shading but I'm decent with composition and exposure, so I wanted to treat this as if I was taking a photograph oh this scene and go from there. I went through about thirty different camera angles before I found this one. I brought the camera in real tight to get some interesting geometric elements with the bars and hopefully see some cool detail on the steel and concrete of the materials. The sign gives us a setting but doesn't really tell a story. Telling a story without a person is damn hard! I thought about adding in a person somehow but figured I should keep to focusing on my lighting and shading haha. Mainly I wanted to avoid two things. First, I didn't want it to look like an arch.vis piece where everything is absolutely perfect and without the tiniest bit of wear. Second, I wanted to avoid it looking like it's a metro station that has been through three wars and an alien attack and then overrun by vicious gangs who attack anyone who enters. I just wanted to make a normal looking setting with everyday wear and tear that's sort of in the middle of these two extremes. -

I would love to se a wider image, maybe 16:9? I also think you should make you light stronger or make much softer shadows, because right now it looks like it's a cloudy day with no direct light, but that kind of lightning wouldn't create shadows with such hard edges. -
