2d Still + Animation

19 Aug 2008Been a while since I have posted here....could you take a look at my demo and let me know what you think. I am moving out to LA in the hopes of landing a job in a company that does either videogames or movies. A little disclaimer...this is the best that I have right now but I know I can do better. I will keep working to improve this demo but honestly is it enough to get a job in the industry? Or do I need to start from scratch and spend another 6 to 12 months building a new demo reel? 19 Aug 2008You don't need to start from scratch, but you're going to have a very difficult time getting a job with that reel. As I've stated before, you really need to stop doing dialogue tests and advanced acting and get back into building a stronger foundation with the 12 principles. There's no need for the gross estimate of time either, if it takes you a month or 12 months it doesn't matter, fact is you need to practice.

Animator's Survival Kit - Richard Williams
Illusion of Life - Frank & Ollie
Character Animation - Preston Blair
Go to http://www.AnimationMentor.com and watch the free Webinars, watch online tutorials (there are plenty) and take it slow and build yourself a solid skillset. Remember, GETTING a job is just the beginning, once you're in there you're going to get shots thrown at you that you've never even thought about, you NEED the solid foundation to be able to tackle complicated and advanced shots in the industry, and do it quickly.

I'm not in the animation industry but like jayg said you need to be able to do what they want you to do in the industry, animators survival kit is a great book to look into..... also like jayg said, animationmentor.com a great place to go..... I think I saw a webinar on demo reels a short while ago... anyway.... a good way to get up and running is entering little contests like 11 second club, cgtalk competitions, hey there are even awesome competitions over here
! Just start from the basics and then slowly work up at your own pace... when I started doing animation a year ago I plunged into modeling and texturing and animation and in the end run I done it all so fast that it all looked terrible and in the end i got frustrated and stopped animation for a few months.... so as said before just start with the basics then work yourself up and soon youll get there Good luck -
