Heya - I've finally made the big step, and bought
http://www.iestynroberts.com , at the moment, theres nothing there, because im currently designing the baby. I'd just thought I'd put my designs up here, so i could get some feedback form you guys.
Here's my 1st attempt - i quite like the simplicity of it, this would be the main page, or the 'News' page, and when you click on the categories up top a new background picture will appear where the flame type object will be, and various things to see in that center box, if you're with me.
Let me know if you guys like it please
Ta very much!

I get a "server not found" error when I click the link...
That being said, if you JUST put it up....it can take up to 48 hours for your URL to propagate over the net.

Yeah, it's simple and effective, but the top menu there is a bit convoluted. It feels like there are a few too many categories up there to me. maybe you could group some of the stuff into sub-categories and what not. But yeah, if you were to rotate the background images, so that they were different every time you refresh or visit, this layout would be really clean and nice to navigate. Show us some more man!

ivan, it is because in the link he provided, there is a comma at the end, remove that and it should work fine

I rarely like sites in this style but this one I think works. I agree about the menu having too many options but hey if you can fill them all up I suppose it'll be fine.
A few things I would like to note. When designing a website, try and make it crips + clean. Remember the font on your website isn't Anti-aliased, so try and include that when designing. Only use smooth style fonts on things like titles and pictures. That being said I would suggest you make your menu out of standard html font, instead of using pictures. A lot of people tend to lean towards using pictures for their menu.. Not good practice, makes it harder for search engines as they cant figure out where' they're going and if you have to update it, say change the text of a button it becomes a nightmare having to load up ps and edit them.
Same kind of crispness I would suggest for those lines mate. (or bevels if they are) the two tone and greyness of them make it look a bit unclean. If they were 1px solid white lines or slightly greyed I think it would really add to it. Also for the header where those clouds are, nicely done, nice opacity but I'd probably bring the blue out a bit and make it glow. Would help it tie in with the glow down the bottom and give it an extra bit of flare.
Cams $20 worth.

Heya guys! Thanks for the feedback!
T - there's nothing on iestynroberts.com as of yet, im still currently designing the site, so it would make sense for it to come up with a fat server not found - i just want feedback on the design first, before i move on to actaully piecing it all together.
Zach - yeah thanks, i aslo feel that there's waay too much stuff up at the top there, I could probarbly put all the 3D stuff into one category, and the have sub-cat's for 3D-Stills, Animation, WIP's etc couldent i? That would get rid of some clutter. I plan on making like 10 different backgorund for where the flame is, so when you refresh it will be a new image all the time.
Cam - thanks man, makes much better sense now. I'll have a play around with the clouds to see what I can come up with that'll make it look better.
Thanks guys - ill try and post an update asap

just a quick note about the menu categories. The most categories you should have are around 5-7. For this impletention you should be able to get away with 5 main categories.

Heya - I had a quick play around today at work, and basically inverted a few things - do you guys feel that this works better? Or do you think it's too 'cold';
I've also narrowed down the menu bar up top, i think what's left up there are pretty essential for what i want.

I prefer the black version... looks warmer...
The stange effect/shape looks better in this version than in blue

yeah, i like the black version too. and if possible, i'd say keep cutting back on some of the menu selections. for example, couldn't designs and drawings be under a general 2d heading? and i wouldn't put Misc unless you have something very specific that absolutely will not fit under any other category. just my 2 cents.
looks better than mine!!

Uh oh... I prefer the white version. Like greatly prefer it...
does that make me a cold individual?
I think I'd take out the clouds though, moreso on the white version - perhaps have something more design oriented, graphic rather than pictoral. Right now it's kinda like 'welcome to heaven' not 'welcome to Iest'

Hmm I dunno...the black version was better looking imo
The white version doesn't have enough contrast...the black one is easier on the eyes
Looks like you're leaning towards the white one though, so nevermind me! I don't know much about webdesign anyways

(for further proof of this statement....just take a look at my website's design
