a sunday evenings work
its not really finished, i would like to get that fur right, i know how to do it, but it would take me all night

Comments-wise: Your teacup needs some sharper edges and the liquid inside (presumably espresso) needs some rim-bubbles.
Great work! I love the crazy fur...reminds me of the chipmunks I used to catch when I was a kid. -

I'm only part way aware of your squirrely past, and this is all too fitting.
I agree with tyson about the teacup and I am thinking that reflection on the front should be displaced a wee bit to make it so it doesnt look see-through.

Agree with the crits too - yep that cup does look translucent (as does the squirrel's foot). Not sure about "rim bubbles"?!
*examines his morning coffee* Ah ok... yes now I see them! hehe (you may want to but a bright specular reflection just on the inner edge of the coffee around almost the entire circumference (wow... amazing what you find in a coffee cup...)
I'd like to see some more highlights on that fur too. (which look kinda gold on a red squirrel)
Oh and a brief explanation of your 'squirrely past' would be good (not sure I want to know... but I'm curious

05 Sep 2005oh my god, i love this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! when i saw it up on the little frontpage thing we have going i thought it was 3d but at the time i was in thr 3d section and didnt see it. man i love this squirrel, can we ahve a wallpaper-fitted version? this is definitely gonig to be my next background

05 Sep 2005hey this is some very nice work its just a few steps away form being a hyperealistic painting . but im not sure if u were going for hyperealism ?.
in any case i think the tea should have some specularity a few white highlights in it to further the idea that its liquid maybe even a very very subtle reflection. other than tht i'd say its a job well done *pats back* -

you know that horrible feeling when you go back to a piece of work after a while and see everything wrong.
while this morning i woke up and went to check replies before work, scrolled down to see the blobby strokes on the top of the tail and realised how much work is left on it.
thankyou for the kind remarks and crits.
i think will make the espresso into a kind of espresso machiato and give him a slight cream moustach.
i was going to stick some roasted coffee beans round the saucer but they looked far too much like squirrel droppings
i did use reference images indirectly, no tracing. the espresso was actually really hard, couldn't get bubles to look right. -

07 Sep 2005It is me but does the top eclipse on the rim of the cup and the eclipse for the rim of the saucer look in a different perspective to each other, the top of the cup rim looks offset.
I dunno but i did a lil thing in ps to show how using 2 point persp you can see how it changes. Maybe just me seeing it wierd.
Other than that. its a damn awsome piece of work done in photoshop, the eye is what draws my attention, its superb.

07 Sep 2005Good eye Aden...I agree with what you said...the top rim does look a bit out of perspective. Almost as if the cup is being viewed orthographically

ant- 73 posts07 Sep 2005yep i spotted that, i knew before i started i would mess up the perspective, i was going to make proxy geometry in maya to sketch over, but i couldn't be arsed and went freehand instead. I wanted to show more of the liquid but didn't correct the saucer.
volume shapes have always been my problem, i know all the techniques, but i am also very lazy, a 2d animator friend I knew could draw objects instantly from any direction because he understood volumes perfectly. takes a lot of practice to do that without thinking. -
