I agree about the fragmentation pattern being too artificial, I fragmented the mesh using RayFire. The latest version is the first one to feature radial fragmentation, but right now it really doesn't have a lot of control over the shape other than some basic parameters. The next version, which is due in a couple of days I think, is about to change that though
If I had to do it again I would probably still use rayfire but I would fragment the mesh using a custom made spline, I think that would yield more realistic results...
