The first flame uses thinking particles for the control. Second flame needs a lot more work on the color. These are pretty low settings and they rendered pretty quick.

Some more tests. My best fire yet. I'm using the Turbulence 4D plugin Similar to FumeFX.

Ah yea I like that one. One thing you might want to do is speed everything up though. The scale of the fire looks to be about the size of your average campfire, which means that the flames would probably move 3-4 times as fast in real life.

Thanks Tyson for the reply. You are right it does seem a bit slow. I will look into that. I'm quite happy to have a tool that can somewhat compete with Fume now
. Now C4D needs a new TP system.
I will see what I can do about the speed and post some more progress.
Btw congrats on the autodesk nomination and your building generator looks so sweet! WIsh I had Max too.

Few more tests I made today with the newest build of TFD. Sorry for the water mark I created the render at work. I own the commercial license of TFD but it's tied to my C4D license at home so I had to use the beta version at work.
Sim time on quad core mac with 10 gigs of ram: 30 min
Render time was 32 minutes.

that smoke color change on the 2nd to last one is really nice. not necessarily realistic but pretty fun to look at

Thanks kilroy. I'm actually using Turbulence FD for Cinema 4D not Max and Fume. I'll have some more updates next week.

wow, very convincing! are you gonna add an environment for it to burn for the fxwars challenge? either way it looks very realistic
-
triplej96 181 posts
Thanks BColbourn! I'm working out the environment ideas now. Three weeks went by of me not working on it due to work but I have a bit of time this week so I'm going to see what I can do. I think I'm going to get a co-worker to shoot some RED plates today for me to use. I plan on object-matchmoving and attaching my flamethrower
.

Small update: Luckily I convinced my co-worker to shoot some footage for me on the RED. It's not the initial idea I had but due to time constraints I have a new idea . Here is a downrezzed preview grab. Should be a fun ride tracking....

looks like a nice plate. never worked with RED before, is it as good as they say?
-

Thanks. Yeah the RED is very nice no doubt about it. It's great for VFX plates can't wait until we get the new sensor but like any camera it's only as good as the user, hehe.

Thanks Sean! Nice to see you around.
Well this isn't the final piece I had in mind for the contest but I didn't have a lot of time to work on it. Main things I wanted to try was make a semi-realistic flamethrower and have it interact with an object in a live action plate.
Here it is:

NUKE script
PS. If you guys haven't seen Tyson's entry for the FXWars contest I advise you go to CGtalk now and check it out. It's freaking amazing! I think I've watched it 12 times now

Well the challenge is over and as most of you know Tyson won best short and someone else won best simulation but I did win best WIP thread so at least I got something, hehe.
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread. ... 980&page=3It was so much fun to participate and I learned a heck of a lot! Hope to see some of you in future challenges.
Maybe I'm losing it but did simplyCG ever have VFX challenges? Seems like I remember seeing some cool stuff from Hype and Tyson?

Congrats Josh! (and Tyson!)
Yeah, SimplyCG had vfx challenges, ages ago. they were really fun, and they pushed me to learn alot, too. But I guess everyone's just been too busy for a while now. I know I have. Although, if there was one I couldn't resist, I'd have to join in....

Here's a test I made last night using basic C4D particles with Turbulence FD. Sim time was around 12 minutes including using the new feature post up-res. Render time at 720p was about 6 hours.

Congrats on the FXwars thing
About your last explosion, I think it's way too turbulent, it makes it look very small scale. I would also like to see it raise up more, because you know, explosions tend to be very hot, no pun intended
-
triplej96 181 posts
Thanks Klemen!
I agree about the turbulence and the smoke is just all wrong it doesn't raise up as you said. Here's a more pyroclastic explosion I made yesterday.
