this is a plaec where you can post test renders, simple renders, simple models, etc. i guess i'll start it off:

Well....lighting-wise I think it looks cool! About as realistic as 2 teapots in a pink box can get
You can do better though!
*edit....just realized this is a "simple renders" (for everyone) thread....so I'll forgive ya
-
BColbourn 2,323 posts
DUH i can do better! this is just a lighting test, and to see how cool pink rooms look and they do look very cool
-
ivanisavich 4,196 posts
I know I know
It's just that I mean you can do better for this forum....I realize the point of this thread....but I think we're all better than teapots at this point! (even if it is just a lighting test)
Now....if they were purple dragons in a dimly lit dungeon....

teapots are fun, dont be dissin' the teapots. and on that note, here's a stupid test sine i just got 3ds max 7 this morning @_@ horray mental ray SSS.
-
ivanisavich 4,196 posts
See...there ya go
...this last one is much more practical
-
BColbourn 2,323 posts
i dont know what you're talkin about, that's a teapot if i ever saw one
edit: what if i used the teapot i actually made? oh yes quite right i made my own teapot and it kicks arse, i'll give a link as soon as i can find it.
-
ivanisavich 4,196 posts
No I mean like...doing things like SSS tests on simple objects is a more advanced way of practicing "the basics"
Doing reflective teapots is something I'd expect from ideziojr over at the3dstudio
-
BColbourn 2,323 posts
what about a refletive shpere on an infinite checkerboard plane?
-
ivanisavich 4,196 posts
yes! ....YES!

maxwell render: 30 mins

@ g3org3:
Well I'm just saying, this isn't a forum where one should post things like default teapots with reflection....if you don't know how to make such a thing, then travel to
http://www.the3dstudio.com, threedy.com or any other number of places where you can learn how to make reflective teapots and cubes and whatever else. This is a forum meant for advanced work (and experimentation if you wish) and not for incredibly simple stuff
THAT being said...the SSS test he posted, and the metal material test he posted are acceptable because some work actually seems to have gone into them (whether for properly lighting or material settings).
I don't want to have to rule with an iron fist or anything here, but as long as we keep the work posted here up to a standard of quality, we won't have many of the same problems that other forums (like the3dstudio) had/have.

Guys for maxwell, use a program called Neat image afterwards, it can save ALOT of time.
It reduces grain on images imensly, you can get a trial on the site, at the moment i dont have link but just search Neat image in google im sure ya find it easy.
-
ah thats a good idea, usually i use neat image to remove grain from photos, but it does work with those maxwell renders, until they make a fastar version :p

THe hair and fur world space modifier is cool...
did you find the hair styler yet?
-
BColbourn 2,323 posts
yeah i found it, but its a little laggy to work with so much hair, i'll make one with like 2000 hairs tomorrow and style the crap out of it.
-
luke 216 posts
another thing that bugs mw is that cause its a WSM you can isollate it to a certain part of your model... i have had to make 1 part export it, and then import it into a different scene
-
BColbourn 2,323 posts
why does that bug you? i dont understand
-
luke 216 posts
it takes alot longer , it would be esaier if you could select the polygons you want to affect and then have the modifier applied only to them.
-
BColbourn 2,323 posts
you can though. in the wsm you can select the polygons u want the hair to be on and then hit apply.
-
luke 216 posts
How ?
I really Cant Doi that

-
luke 216 posts
wow, people like that
, may have to write a tutorial on how to make it...
ppl on my site like it aswel....
wow.. playing is goooood
but basically its, a geosphere, with a few bevels for the spikes, then noise, then sqeeze it till it turns inside out, then twist... i have the .max if you wanna have a play.
