Volumetric Text Turorial

16 Feb 2008Hi all, I've recorded my first video tutorial!
I liked the captions in the new Indiana Jones trailer - volumetric light and haze - so thought I'd make my own in After Effects. I don't have Trapcode Shine that might normally be used for this kind of thing, so everything can be done using the regular plugins available in AE 7 or CS3 Pro.

Really nice tutorial! I like it a lot. What did you use to record cause the quality was outstanding. And I got to say I wish if all tutorials were done as well as that with the zooming and moving around on screen so we can actually see what kind of numbers are being put in. Bravo! -

Nice technique, using the expression to link the center to the animated solid.
As for making 3d text in After Effects, have you seen Maltaannon's custom tool? it's free.

16 Feb 2008Thanks for the feedback guys. Yep, I used Camtasia for the capture. Worth checking out I'd say. I've only got the 30 day trial version but it's easy to use and you get the option of editing/adding in the zoom keyframes in the editor after capturing full-screen.

Great tut Christian! I did a few tuts myself, and I know there goes a lot of work in a 'good' tutorial: and you did very well.
Clear and right to the point. You gave a lot of interesting tips and uses away, always worth watching it.
Specialy liked the 'homebrew smoke'. This reminds me of something:
I was looking for that for a while: Andrew K. also made a few on the subject, but I wasn't ready for it at the time.
I made a nature docu, filmed in the mist (fog), but I missed a few scenes. Of course when I went back, there was a harsh bright sunlight instead of the romantic hazy fog.
With your 'smoke' tip, maybe I'll be able to fix the sunny shots.
Thanx for this nice tutorial, and maybe yo will do some other ones in the near future? Hope so. -
