Seems like a bit of a silly tutorial eh? Not so my friends. Boujou is anything but an "automatic tracker" There are some cool new features in the latest, greatest, version. And if you've never used it before, and are curious to what it's all about... Then check out this tutorial. Its made mainly for people who want to get their feet wet in 3d tracking/matchmoving, and maybe push it one step further. As soon as I get some terrible footage, I plan on doing a more in depth tutorial, consisting of some more tough, and technical problems. This tutorial is about a half hour, of which your time is non-refundable. So i'm sorry if you watch it on accident and don't like it.

great tutorial! i like that you showed how to make the auto-track a little better using manual tracks.
That's exactly what I was trying to do on my bloood shot (in the factory thread), but the manual trackers just wouldn't work at all. I'd right click, select track, and they wouldn't do anything. (boujou 2.1). But at least I see I was on the right track!
and that mesh-from-track-points feature is wicked! that mesh will export with the track?

Thanks Zach.... I have no experience in this kind of thing.... it's cool to see stuff like this.

yeah man, and you can also bring in .obj files and all sorts of other stuff that i'll cover in the next tutorial. It's pretty sweet for the most part. But I still haven't had an "automatic track" out of it yet.

Never even opened Boujou in my life. But I always love learning!
Thank You Zach!

I am soooo going to check this out! The other day I was chatting to my boss and saying "I'd like to at least know how it's done"... at the time I couldn't quite explain the itch inside my cranium followed by the dizziness and nausea 15 minutes later. And now I know it was Z using his mind reading techniques!
(Z you may need a little practice there... there are some side effects, I was convinced my name was Susan for at least 4 hours)

Sorry about the dizzyness man. I have been working on controlling multiple slaves telepathically and sometimes "I cross the streams" resulting in a slight dizzyness to full on nausea and other symptoms that you described such as the temporary gender reassignment. But enough malarky from me... Glad you liked it so far. If you like this one, wait till the next one comes out. There's some good stuff I got cookin for that one. I might even have to do a few different tutorials to describe how to tackle some of the different inherent problems such as motion blur, objects leaving the frame, lens warp, missing money off your dresser, tracks that break, and then cause headaches... ect. So keep you eye/s peeled like bananas for that tutorial. I had some coffee, let's go ride our bikes!

Hey Zachm,
Cheers mate, sweet tutorial! Man when i did this last week i recreated the side of the mountain snapping verts to the points in Max, took around two hours, and you recreated it in two clicks! geeze wish i knew that back then
that's one cool feature of Boujou. But can you export this to Max with the data?
One question; you mentioned about tracking back and forth and combining the data to produce a better result. Can you expand on how this is done?
Thanks again, can't wait for the next one, i didn't quite understand the locators and how they get used so maybe a touch on them.
Cheers - Dave.

HEY maybe Z could make a tut on mind reading and control...
sure helps with obtaining new clients..
that and part 2 of this awesome tracking tut.

Sure is cheap out here! Not sure if it's the demand that makes the price nice and low... or the nice low price increases demand - it's certainly the cross gender capital of the world!
Um... re the above statement - I doubt it is the low price that makes it so prevalent here. I mean, I can't imagine anyone saying "Yeah well... I would become a woman, but the prices are just so darn restrictive, so i think I'll stay a man"

To the first question, yes, you can export that geometry out, though if you plan on doing that, it's important to get that data out in the correct scale, of your scene so you should make sure to calibrate your camera and make sure your locators all represent the scale, and perspective of your shot. Otherwise you might as well not even bother exporting the geometry, because it won't be right in your scene.
To the second question, 99% of the time, you are going to end up solving something like that as a nodal pan, except if for some reason, you have an incredible amount of parallax on the shot. Because in spite of the fact that you are indeed rotating the camera offset from your own personal axis of rotation, you are pivoted to a point, and the camera is attached to you. Freemoves come in when you are running around an area with the camera, tilting, twisting, and translating all at once. Pans and tilts alone are almost always nodal solves.
Hope that helps man!

Cheers Zachm,
Yeh the second one probably answers a problem i've been having recently, cheers
Though exporting the mesh sounds a ball ache, is this same with scene geometry, like the cube etc..
Is there any way to import scene geometry? Though that said i don't think that would be needed.
Cheers again - Dave

Well, exporting scene geometry isn't bad, although i'd never use the geometry it creates as final geometry, it's more just kind of proxy geometry to get a good idea of how you should make your actual geometry. A geometry template if you will.
As far as importing models, Yeah, you can do it.
When you have your camera solved, you can go to the menu on the top and under 3d tasks, select import obj file. This is great, because with your camera properly calibrated, you can scale your scene to the right size and axis in Boujou, and then just start going to town in 3d with the proper scale. That in fact is one of the most important things after doing a 3d track is getting the proper scene scale. If your scene is too small, any kind of noise in the camera path is going to be amplified like crazy. So always use your grid to establish a measurement system, like one square=1 meter. That's usually a good system, because then you can go big.

can anyone point me to the original footage so i can follow the tutorial?
-
zachm 1,230 posts
I don't think that I included any of the footage in the tutorial files, I actually don't remember. But the tutorial isn't really specific to that footage anyway. It's more of a primer to the software more than anything.

i know, but i like to follow along
plus i dont think i can get aerial footage like that.
if you can upload it that would be great....if not then don't sweat it
oh yea...is there ever gonna be a part 2
