Model progress so far.... -
30 Aug 2007Hey peoples,
So the idea is to have this helicopter thing fly up to the side of a giant wall, while being shot at from teh ground below, have it transform into some kind of all-terrain wheeled vehicle while it's perpenticular to the wall (ie, 90 degrees sideways) and have it drive straight down the wall while shooting etc.
Hopefully I can get it done in 2 days

Here's a playblast of the first half of the animation.
I haven't done the transforming part yet so that's why it cuts off at the end...but that part when it's up against the wall is when it transforms into the wheeled vehicle.

31 Aug 2007Ok so no transforming animation yet (that's why it just stays a helicopter through the whole shot)...but I animated the part after the transformation.
The shot will end as we fly through the last explosion's plume of smoke.

mechis 520 posts31 Aug 2007Cool stuff... can you talk a little about the texturing? Are those little lights in the section of the wall closest to the camera? or is it light shining through the holes? I love how simply your geo looks, but the texturing adds a ton of detail.

31 Aug 2007Ok so I'm kinda working backwards here....
I'm getting EVERYTHING done except for the transformation of the helicopter....saving the hardest for last so that I know all my other marbles are in place first.
Updates to come soon....rendering is done on the environment etc so I'll have something substancial to show soon -

Well I've got an animation update for those of you following the thread.

Things to fix:
-make tracer fire shots thinner
-work on blurring out the helicopter blades on the left copter (maybe...if I have time)
-white outline on right side of main wall when it passes plumes of smoke on the right (alpha issue)
Still gotta add the main copter....
Hopefully I can get that done tonight....it's 3:30am...looks like I'm gonna be up for a while :O
If not, I'll finish it up tommorow I guess! -
ptaverner 379 posts01 Sep 2007Goes without saying that it rocks. There's only one part that I don't really like. ( I watched it at least 15 times in a row ) The part I don't really care for is the smoke from the impact 3 seconds in. It looks good, but I think it could look even better. Saying I don't like it isn't really a true statement. I like that part, it's the realization of the smoke that leaves me a little.. I don't know. Maybe if a sizable CHUNK of the wall flew off it would help.
For all those who know me, you know this is creative crit, not a dis.

Fantastic the whole way, had me holding onto my chair.
If I had to crit, and was held down at the point of a knife i'd say the smoke is maybe a bit bland and controlled... but other than, everything is spot spot spot on. -

I couldn't agree more! then you could spend 8-12 hours a day teaching me everything you know!
That's friggin' phenomenal. If there could only be one animator left on earth, I'd want it to be you. I mean, everything in this shot is sweet! from the blooming speculars to the atmosphere haze to the metal shaders...
unbelievable work. plug it here, then watch for the plug at CGTalk, folks... well deserved. -

bzudo 151 posts13 Sep 2007awesome work tyson, as per the norm. i had a question about the transformation playblast. did you use scripting on the transformation? that way you only had to key from the animation as a whole instead of key framing every pieces of geometry. to use an after affects analogy. did you tie the transformation animation to and expression slider and just key frame the slider?
i hope that makes sense.
i also hope that if you did in fact do this you could explain that process for us small folk. -

For the animation what technique did you use? I'm goig to do something similar but I no idea for the animation process. Did you use dummy with spring constraints?
