So I was waiting for a After Effects render to finish at work and I had the sudden urge to try and model a baby penguin. Mostly just a modeling exercise. I've only done a couple of organic models so I thought a cute little penguin would be fun. I'm sure I will rig and finally take a stab at a walk cycle with it. I've spent maybe 45 minutes on it so far but wanted to share my early work.

Small Update. Rounding the little guy out trying to give a more organic feel.

Good start man. It's a little tough to tell from the side angle shot but it appears his feet may be a tiny bit too far forward. He looks a bit off centered.

Thanks for the comment JayG. You are spot on about the feet, nice eye
. Just fixed that. Looking forward to texturing and rigging him!

What's your plan for the eyebrows?

I'm not entirely sure yet with eyebrows. Maybe just paint them in?

There's only a couple of loops there so they won't be animatable if they're painted. You could either add some more geometry for that purpose or have them be separate pieces. You may want to add a couple more loops for eyelids too.

Thanks JayG for the comments and tips. Ah yes you are right about the loops. Maybe adding the eyebrows separately will give me more freedom. I'll ad some more loops to the eyelids as well. I think I will use a morph for the blinking. I'm fairly new to character modeling, rigging and animating so I think it will be quite the learning experience.

Cool. Morph will be fine for the blinks, and the brows too if you wanted. But even with morphs you still geometry there to scult or it will look crappy.
Only take a couple of extra polys to make a big difference so it's not a big deal.

Finally getting a chance to work on a few side projects. We have 20 inches of snow coming so they say. Well I got my little penguin all rigged up. Even added a spring constraint for his cute little tail. Spring constraints are so cool! Spent a good 6 hours on the rigging yesterday! Rig seems to be working great thus far but I think I need to make a waddle cycle to make it sure it's a nice and tight. So I guess waddle cycle, UVs and texturing in BP tomorrow. Probably will make some morphs in Zbrush too.
Attached rig and my low poly model without the hypernurbs.
Cheers,

Well I finished the rig. I added a few more controls like a morph a morph slider for his eyes and a cluster with spring constraint for his belly along with spring constraint for his tail. I just completed my first walk cycle as well. Wow, I really feel for professional animators and riggers! Way harder than it looks and very tedious but also very rewarding! Next up UVs then bodypaint and hair.

Couple of fur renders using hair in C4D. New walk cycle coming as well. Man, character work is a bit addicting.

the animation is a bit too subtle imo. i couldn't really understand that he is walking.
no offense, if felt more a bit like wobbling left and right while idling .

Thanks for the input diemacht. My first time animating a walk cycle and I find it even harder to do with an animal that has such small legs.

for a reference i would suggest you to watch Surfs Up! and happy feet. I really love Surfs Up! Awesome movie
http://www.imageworks.com/ipax/docs/Sig ... eNotes.pdfhere is a making of pdf from surfs up from page 19 to 30 or something there are informations about the rigging animation and the body language. Hope it helps.
