Concept of JUHANI JOKINEN
3d model! (i don't need to reproduce perfectly)

What do you think? (light/texturing/similar) Is it quite "real" the atmosphere? Thanks to tyson and diemacht for help me to create the "pile" of dirt!

06 Nov 2008Wow nice one! How do you create such straight lines with a wacom? Do you use a ruler with your tablet pen? Do you first outline the basic structure with the line tool in photoshop or something?

06 Nov 2008t. i think he diddnt draw it he just tries to remake it in 3d
the render looks good but needs some work imo..
first of all try to make the buildings that we see through the door a bit blurry with depth of field because in the painting you cant see them so good aswell and they are too blocky and look to much like game graphic..
the render needs more contrast too its a bit washed out..
the color could be a more washed out orangeis... -
06 Nov 2008i did a quick mash up of what i think. i hope you dont mind. its just a suggestion how it would look good imo it isnt perfectly done as i said just roughly the blurs is just made with a brush for example.

I havent' draw that concept but I only reproduced the 3d model (http://www.finallycg.com/uploads/images/warehouse2.jpg) (Juhani Jokinen is the author as I wrote). And thanks a lot for your advice, i love your mash up!! Only now that i can compare my image with yours, i can see that my version is really washed out When I come back home I want to try to reproduce this "creepy" feeling And thanks for the advice about the depth of field!

Daniel 103 posts07 Nov 2008I tried to improve my render! I added a ambient occlusion pass, more contrast to image, added some water on the floor, lowered the sun (I don't know if it's better), added a blurred background and applyed a sharped filter. Is it better?

looks great
but the blurry buildigs were a bit better imo....
now if you do some post process work in photoshop like contrast and color correction that it will be definately awesome!! -

Daniel 103 posts10 Nov 2008Thanks a lot guys for your words!! I added the buildings as you advice me diemacht! I changed the textures, more little and I blurred with the background. And I added a layer with the air dust kilroy! (a very soft pass, maybe too soft?) What do you think? Thanks a lot again!

One thing dough... I dont see any direct light on your reference. The direct light on your image burns out the floor and the overall image is dark. Now take a look at your room at when sun directly hits your windows. Your room is bright. Its not that dark. It seems to me that you are trying to warm up a cold scene. The scene itself is cold, old rusty room and few cold buildings. I dont know, perhaps i am wrong but i personally would putt a little stronger skylight and remove the direct sunlight, or a very soft blueish area light + some volume and dust.
If you were aiming for a dark room with strong sun disregard my post -

Daniel 103 posts11 Nov 2008Thanks a lot guys again!! I re-done the render with more quality (16/16 samples instead 4/4 as in the previous preview version). I "light-up" a little the glasses and added more visible dust specially in the holes of the left windows as you can see. Can I consider this the final version? Personally I'm already satisfied and I must thank you for the precious advices of all you!
@DarkNemos : thanks you to for you consideration! You're right when you say I'm trying to warm up a cold scene This is was in my mind but I can try a more cold scene, as in the concept!

Daniel 103 posts12 Nov 2008Thanks a lot! Now I have a problem: one of my friend ask me a print of this scene. The render should be 4500x2925. It's so heavy for my pc! Mental ray can't render and return me a memory problem message. But while I can split the render in more tile (and works well) I don't know how I can split the final gather pass ! Any ideas? Thanks again for appreciated the scene!

13 Nov 2008you use probably 32 bit version hehe
hmm dont understand what you mean you can split the render in parts and it renders the final image with final gather on top.
do you mean render elements? -
13 Nov 2008you could use your own pc as a "render farm" with backburner and split the image render in rows. and at final the whole parts were merged and you have one final image with all your passes.
