I have been using this programme now for about two years, and was fortunate enough to have intermediate and then advanced level training in it (which proved to be of immeasurable worth).
Does anyone else on the forum use this software at all?

I've been away for nearer 3 and a half years now too! been working in the POS industry - started on MAX and then moved to solidworks (which rocks for engineering modelling).
I think I will have pretty much regressed as far as MAX goes these days - probably right back to noob status!!

It's kind of hard to explain just how good solidworks is - its a solid modeller for a start, and is designed for CAM (nope, not you, cammy)
means if you needed to model up a product or bit of architecture, then you could, and then you can easily change the design at any point due to a heirarchy based history you can go back to or even re-order at will. -
26 Jan 2008Yea I've never used Solidworks myself...although I remember a friend in highschool who was into it.
I used some CAD software earlier on in highschool...but strayed away from it once I got into 3d Studio Max. Although I do have to say that I enjoyed the precise-ness of the CAD software I used....modelling something with exact proportions was fun and challenging.
As for me...well I'm living in New Zealand now, and working for an animation studio called MAKE...so you could say things have changed a bit -

Howdy Rich!
I think we should have a 'Rich is back' thread... none of this understated stuff! Good to see things are going well for you man. I think you'll find we have all grown somewhat since you were last seen luking around these parts. I'm now Anim Sup at a largish (and still growing) studio here in Bangkok... Tyson is now out of nappies and Cam has grown some really weird green mould on his favourite block of cheese.
But back on topic... no, I haven't used solidworks. What's the draw? Is it more precision / technical? -

Yeah, Solidworks is a very precise tool for CAD/CAM - it allows you to do all engineering calculations to examine weights of objects prior to manufacture, stress analysis etc - you can created full molding drafts etc on different parts so things are actually possible to make in the real world. BUT....
That is not why i love it.
The real reason is WORKFLOW...
I have never been able to sit down at a modelling client and be able to create something so easily and so adjustable. e.g. - you create a car - you change the size of the wheels? the body shape could auto update to suit - no need to change individual parts as you model it with a certain amount of inbuilt intelligence.
it is awesome.
