i think most people like Camtasia, but I use Easy Video Capture.

I had no problem recording in max, perhaps it is your video driver settings in MAX. What one are you using, and have you tried any others?

yeah, i haven't had a problem. but i haven't used camtasia. i ALWAYS have problems with audio syncing up though, and have scoured the pages and forums of the ones i use for answers. nothing works yet.

I use camtasia too and i remember my friend once mentioned that he got a black screen after recording , now i cant remember his works exactly but have you tried running it as admin or changing the program compatabilities so it runs in ether windows xp or try running in 256 colours option,
Right click on the desktop icon then select properties then comparabilities and you can access these options there. but apart from trying that im clueless.
