What methods do you use to tweak your comp?

xsub 33 posts18 Oct 2010I'm interested in hearing any of your methods to adding realism. Obviously 99% of the work is in the actual 3D work, (modelling, texturing, lighting..) - but I'm interested in the techniques used when working with post production. For example, vignettes, blurring, DOF, chromatic aberration and so on.
Right now I think I'll add a slight vignette, possibly slight blur but I've yet to be convinced about chromatic aberration as I see it being used too much, making it look over the top.

19 Oct 2010vignette when i make it in after effects i use a very very dark brown layer and set the layer blending to multiply and to 75%
for the chromatic abberation i use the same layer as a basis.
DOF is to be used very carefully so it doesnt look like a miniature.
chromatic aberration is difficult to hit right. most of the time i make it so tiny that it almost doesn't change anything but you kinda "feel" it
sometimes a fake cam shake(not a real shake but a small noise so it kinda "wobbles" more realistic like a shoulder cam
sometimes some bokeh particle(i can not stress the word SOME enough)
all those effects have to be used very carefully if you overuse it you can even make a real scene look like its fake
(which could be a nice effect too ) -

I ran into a problem early on using a vignette - top right section of my animation has (at the beginning) a bolt of white light and the vignette knocks some of it out and ideally i'd like it to be fully white. I suppose i could animate the vector mask (using feather stroke) that i used to make the mask, and then animate the points. -
20 Oct 2010yeah or you could just add a white layer in "add" or "screen" with 20-40% to the place it should be lighter with a very very high feather and a rough mask of the space you need lighter.
