MAX object position to AE layer position using RPF files

i found RPF "camera export technique" as useful exporting camera settings as object tracking purposes.
How? simple, i rendered the main camera as RPF sequence including the zDepth channel. Nothing new about this.
Then attached a new camera to the object I wanted to track in max. Same position, same rotation and linked to it. Simple.
Since RPF files includes ABSOLUT camera position data I rendered the second camera into a RPF sequence too. But this footage is going to serve as data bridge between MAX and AE, I'll never see it in my comp so to keep render times low i pull down the output size to 1x1 pixels, disabled everything (GI, lights, shadows,...) and hide every single object.
Then i have 2 sequences to import into the after project.
The main one (full sized) will be the visible footage, and the second one (1x1 pixels from camera 2) will be used as data provider exclusively.
I create both AE cameras using the RPF camera import / keyframe assistant
Copy the position and rotation data from the second to a new null object (3d layer), then delete both the camera and the layer from the timeline.
Don't forget to change the main camera values to match the 3ds max camera used to export the RPF secuence. This is important to get the right result!!
Thats all, now the null object will perfectly track the 3d object rendered in the main footage.
I found it very useful specially if you don't want to play with extra plugins.

06 May 2008I have been using this technique since i came to know it's useful:) but after trying a lot i could not get that much perfection as we can get by using MAX2AE extra plugin in max.
RPF technique is good when you are not playing with FOV and lens, cbaristo, u added one new thing in it that you copy all RPF data to AE 3d null object, -

Why is this less effective if you need DOF and Lenses? It is just a simple way to import object position from max to ae.
BTW, i dont know MAX2AE, i dont have it, never saw it working and thats why i thought this solution
