Hey all,
Don't know if anyone else is having this problem but After Effects CS3 is crashing on me every five minutes. There's no diagnostics so I can only assume it's a memory thing - once it uses up so much RAM it crashes. RAM gets eaten up by it quite rapidly too. I'm afraid to do anything and have to save after every keyframe for fear of losing all my work. As you can imagine, not the best of situations. I'm using a project I started in AE7. It's 8-bit, PAL DV res, so nothing majorly taxing. I'm literally just tweaking things but I never got a crash in AE7 so it must be something new in CS3.
I tried to get the secret preferences dialog up, but that appears to have been removed, or the shortcut to it has been changed.
Any ideas?
My PC has 2.25Gb RAM. I've set the memory management in AE to the attached, just in case you have any suggestions.
Basically I'm trying to get an entry-level compositing job, and I'm putting together a reel of my best work, which I'm trying to tweak to make as good as I can possibly make it. With AE crashing on me so often, it's gonna be a long slog!

Ignore me, the secret prefs are still there, I was just releasing SHIFT too early. Pillock.
Anyway, the problem goes away if I purge the image caches, but I have to do that manually. Better than nothing I suppose.

Hey all, it's now sorted. In the above dialog box I'd gone and set the Max RAM Cache size too high, in an attempt to get longer RAM previews. Adobe don't recommend you change this above 60%. Seems to have done the trick.

Hey Christian,
this is actually something I struggled with when I first installed AE 6.5 a few years ago. I was getting crashing ALL THE TIME, and it was making me nuts! After a few days of digging around on the adobe message boards, I had found some people who had the same problem and had posted the recommended memory settings, and I had never had a problem since. Unfortunately, I had never written them down (what was I thinking!!). I don't even remember what they were anymore.

Hey Sean, no worries. AE's been working like a charm since I reset the max RAM Cache size to 60% and the Max Memory Usage to 120%.
Oddly on the page I posted, there's no mention of the Conformed Media Cache settings. I need to dig a bit deeper, as they sound useful!

Resetted my AE prefs according to Christian: it's all zipping through now.

Well I haven't gone to adjust it yet just cause i haven't used it again since this thread started but, I think part of my problem is im running 4 gigs with ex which only reads (i think) 2.5 or something. so i guess ill just have to test it but i dont know if it is trying to take the % from the whole 4 gigs or just the 2.5....

HEY I AM YOUR MAN i struggled on a daily bases with this lower your cache 2000 enough and the 50 or 40% for the memory cash and the ram usage 100%
and advice invest in GridIron Neuclon 2 pro (the older one not worth it in my opinion) (soz don't remember the spelling) that plug in is a life saver spent a week to render a scene cause of crashing but that plug in solved it all (keep in mind its not very good with AVI (xvid) from my experience but for huge render quick time render awesome they even have tuts on their site) there is max settings so if the ram problem is there (not able to use more than 2gb) it will use max performance on the pc so that you cant even move the mouse xD look it up and TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK I AM SURE U WILL HAVE FUN AND WILL BRING SMILE TO YOU AND UR FUTURE CHILDREN HAHAHA
