Optimal AE Render Settings

SHiFT 13 posts30 Jun 2007What are the settings that I should be using to get the best quality in AE (and try to keep the file size down)? I'm currently exporting with quicktime and mpeg4, but I'd like a better alternative (because I feel I'm losing a lot of color and contrast, especially with dark images). I've been reading that H.264 for quicktime has really good quality, but for whatever reason when I try to export with that, AE crashes. Probably my mistake since I'm also relatively new to AE.
What settings do you guys use? I'm partial to MOV format, is that hindering quality in any way? Where can I find out more info regarding the different compressions and their quality?

Claymation 600 posts30 Jun 2007I'm sure some of the other guys can give you a better answer, but I usually use quicktime and sorenson3. -

H.264 (not sure why it's crashing for you) and Sorenson 3 are probably your best bet.
However, even better would be to purchase a copy of Sorenson Squeeze....it has (in my opinion) the best possible compression settings available, and I use it for everything (ie...export uncompressed from AE, then compress in Squeeze). -

03 Jul 2007yeah, H264 crashes my AE alot, too. sometimes it works, sometimes it crashes.
If I'm just posting something on the web, I render out of AE as a sorenson 3 MOV, then compress AGAIN with sorenson squeeze. If I render out a real short film, something I will want to make lots of different versions of, I render out a TGA sequence as a master, then render it out using that master frame set later in whatever formats I need.
My favorite preset in Sorenson Squeeze is the QT HD 480 (or something like that). But you should do a bunch of tests to compare file size with quality and see which one works best for you. -

i guess the consensus pretty much seems to be sorenson 3
