20 May 2007not yet. I'm waiting for the full versions to be released, and I'm going to just upgrade my entire production suite at the same time. And while there are some really cool things it looks like they've added, this isn't really a big upgrade for visual effects artists. It seems like they're trying to make AE more Flash-friendly. If they were concerned about visual effects artists, something like this PV Feather would've been integrated long ago, along with mask vertex tracking, which is only available via a script right now.
Have you tried it? does it have this built in? did I just waste $70? hahahaha... -
20 May 2007all I know about afx (from a friend who is a developper, creator of freeform for afx) well all I know is that you'll be able to render on multiple machines that makes it worth it.
and no I haven't tried the plug-ins, I do little afx but I try to keep my focus on max and fR -
20 May 2007yeah, that will be really sweet, but at home I only ever work on SD footage anyway (standard definition), which just flies through AE on my machine (dual proc Boxx, 4 gigs RAM) (yes, i know i can only access about 2 gigs of the RAM). So while that is an awesome feature, I'm not scrambling for it for my home machine.
I tried out this plug in, by the way. REALLY cool!! it applies as an effect, but once you "initiate" it, it adds a weird new duplicate mask! Really cool, works awesome! -

22 May 2007hahaha, no! don't buy it unless you need it!
try rotoing something with motion blur. you will find that the blur is different all around the object. On one area, a feather of 20 might be perfect, but on another area, 2 might do the trick.
This is impossible with a single mask using AE's default mask tools. There are work arounds, but its just easier to have a non-uniform feather edge to control it.
seriously, though, don't buy it unless you need it. I've been waiting for it for years, so I didn't hesitate. -

For as long as they've been touting AE as an all around app, this is one of the MAJOR things they have been missing in the updates that have been released since v.5 Itoo bad it doesn't come with it yet. Hmph.
