19 Sep 2006i've never met anyone that swore by combustion only. At Digital Domain (and I think Imageworks), they used to use it simply for rotoing, because you could apply tracking data to individual mask points, which AE still can't do.
but Sihouette Roto solves every roto issue you could think of in AE. it has everything and a bag of chips! word up! -

I think I'll just stick to Premiere and AE. Can't wait to get the latest version of premiere when I upgrade my PC.
I'm using an old version of premiere right now and I don't have too many issues with it. the thing that bothers me the most about AE is no export to tape feature

under preferences, you can change your previews to appear on either the monitor or an external firewire device. pick the firewire, plugin your camera, and Ram preview. as it's playing back, just hit record.
true, not as orderly and clean as premiere's but it works. unless your movie's too big to RAM preview. -

30 Sep 2006i haven't spent much time on AE 7 yet. Has anyone had any problems with it? i'm gonna upgrade very soon, i think, and want to know what headaches to expect, if any. I played around with it at my last job for a few days and didn't have a single problem.
any likes or dislikes? -
30 Sep 2006I've been using it at home for about since two weeks after it came out. So far, I really like it actually. My only real gripe goes for all the CS upgrade crap. They need to Get rid of this bridge garbage and just give each program it's own photoshop'esque file browser. I hate trying to look at my files or sort through something and have to wait for a different program to start up and slow the whole process down. Whaaaaa! But other than that, It's great. You'll love the curve editor and the preset window layouts are tasty but I never use them as I have my own preferences pretty much. The timewarp feature is nice, way better than it has been in previous versions, but if you have reelvis re-timer, I wouldnt pull away from the table yet, as nothing really matches that one for re-timing. Oh, and the HDR support is a cool feature. I would say that I haven't run into any bugs really other than it being finnicky with certain iff files here and there. Make the leap of faith with confidence man, if you love after effects, you'll dig the upgrade!

10 Jan 2007dudes and dudettes, this is gonna blow your mind...
In After Effects 7.0 (might work with earlier versions, haven't tried it), go to the Preferences pulldown menu, and hold down SHIFT while you click on the word "General". Then, when the usual preferences panel pops up, click the "Previous" button. You will see this.
I wonder what other secrets AE holds... -

11 Jan 2007well, the first part will purge your RAM while AE is rendering a movie at an interval you set. Sometimes AE crashes during rendering, giving an "out of memory" error. This should clear the memory before it fills and let your movie render. Although, I've been using AE for a long time, and the only time I ever had those rendering errors were when I first installed 6.5. So they're rare errors, which is, I guess, why this dialogue isn't part of the normal preferences.
the second part is a bit more obscure. I've never had sequence rendering errors, except for warning messages when I'm gonna write over some files (and i'm not sure that counts). But the fact that the prgrammers felt the need to put (DANGER!) in an already-secret dialogue box tells me to never, ever check it unless i'm specifically told to by someone who knows much more than me. -
Double Supercool 10 posts11 Jan 2007I am pretty sure that is right for the first bit. I recall Aharon Rabinowitz doing a quick tip on this in his creative cow AE podcast (which is awesome BTW). You can use it if you don't have much RAM and your renders are screwing up. -
25 Mar 2007so i wasn't sure where exactly to post this, and didn't feel it was worth a new thread, since we have a few AE threads already, but I just got the AE Studio Techniques book. Holy crap!
zach and i were chatting about it a bit last week in the chatroom. zach, yeah, thats a good tip using the sampled gradient to match grain! three things completely blew me away though:
a)in the 2D tracking section, he talks about stabilizing footage, then parenting a 3d camera to that stabilized footage - my jaw hit the floor when i tried it!! what a damn genius technique!!
b)shows the easiest way to use the "find edges" effects i've ever seen. I usually have to pre-comp and set alpha channel and all that crap, but he does it super easy.
c)in a later chapter that Stu wrote (15, i think), he describes the simplest way to make lightwrap i've ever seen without getting a plugin.
And all this is just from about 1/2 an hour of browsing through the book!
Seriously, guys, if you have AE 7 and you want to do visual effects, you must own this book, and read it cover to cover! and thanks zach, teling me about that sweet grain technique is what finally pushed me over the edge to get it!
(you guys have to try the 2d tracking thing - it will blow your mind!) -
