More "fun" with Paint FX

mitm2002 68 posts17 Jun 2008Okay, so I have a very large scene, not in terms of polygons, but in terms of the distance between objects in my scene. Initially I ran into problems with the clipping planes of the cameras, but just increased that in the camera attributes. Now I'm running into a similar problem, but with Paint FX. I'm trying to make some Paint FX stars in the distance, but for some reason, it won't let me paint strokes far away from the origin (I've selected "Paint At Depth" as well as "Draw As Mesh"). So I thought I'd trick it by creating the Paint FX stars at the origin on the grid, and then moving the strokes to where I needed - but when I did that, even though the Paint FX strokes were visible in the viewport, they did NOT render. Anybody know why this is? And if so, what the fix is? Does it have something to do with limits of the projection or something?

26 Jun 2008What do you mean......"it won't let me paint strokes far away from the origin" is this your camera? I do know you have to really work with manipulating the camera veiw to get what you what with things like rain or snow, so you get depth to it. I woud have thought the camera attributes would solve too. I know I tried this and never did get it to work I had to workaround with a backstill. I will hyave to play with this today.
What version of Maya are you Running?......good luck -

I don't mean the origin of the camera, but generally-speaking, the location of the grid. I'm a little behind the times version-wise - running Maya 8. The other thing I don't like about PaintFX stars is that the reptition of stars is quite obvious - but maybe I can change this with a brush-stroke setting or something.

29 Jun 2008Man, if you want good looking stars, just grab some star pics from online, or take some yourself, and map them to a sphere, if you want some depth, you can do a few spheres and map transparency onto the inner few, I think that's going to be a lot more efficient anyways.
