Hey guys,
I'm looking to create grass. I don't really want to use PFX because of the memory hogging. Is there a way to make a nice texture from the procedurals? Or does someone have a good one? Thanks
.

you might want to look into using maya hair if you want dynamic flowing grass, or if you just want static grass you can try fur. if you want dynamic and good looking grass there's a way to use a combination of hair and fur.

fur grass can be nice, but again it's going to be a memory hog.
If you're just looking for a texture, take a picture of grass. Or take one from
http://www.cgtextures.com/.
How realistic are you looking to go?

displacement is another option, if you want cut grass that isn't entirely flat. but then again if you want to add some depth you could just add a normal or bump map to the diffuse texture to accomplish that from a distance.

I have trying to make a field of grass for my outdoor scene for about a year now and cant get any good results and/or mem. problem/crashing. in 3d studio max there are a few great tuts. but Im a Maya user.
So How would you go about setting up a displacement map for a large scene. I have a grass shader of some sort, but unsure how to connect in a approx. Edit. displ. map. Like how the tree and input outputs would look like.
If you can please explain on how to create it, that would be excellent. Its pretty much just a flat plane that slopes down and out. Simple enough, just cant get a realistic look.

one method you could do is break up the patches of grass and render them seperately, then bringing them abck together in a post environment by overlaying the renders ontop of eachother. when was talking about the displacement technique i was using 3ds max so i wasnt really thinking about maya. but the maya fur might be your best bet, breaking it up into patches and such.

look in the visor at the ncloth examples, you'll see a couple environment ones in there that may get you going on some cool ideas. Good luck man.

Look-wise, I'm super satisfied with the Maya Fur grass preset - but yeah, depending on your computer and settings, it can really increase your render time. Personally, I think it's worth it. And I think the Maya Fur grass looks much better than PaintFX grass. But if there's a way to make decent grass render faster, add my name to the list of people interested to hear the solution - and please post some pics!
