I was just watching a lecture and it gave me an idea that may be fun for some of us here at SCG.
What if we had a weekly or bi-weekly pose challenge with each one being a different emotion or action? One of the assignments I had in the past was each week to create a different pose of a certain emotion and we'd get critiques on things like silhouette, line of action, twinning, weight, balance, etc. I think doing something like that here would be interesting. It would also be easy because it wouldn't take a month to do it and you could get fairly fast feedback on your poses. There are plenty of animators here and I know a lot of people who may be strongest in other areas like to animate on the side, and this would be perfect for that.
Also, we could differentiate between full body poses or just facial, or even no facial at all.
Example:
Pose of the Week: Excitement!
Use your favorite character and pose out the most dynamic "excitement" pose you can. You can use props and put your character in an environment if you like.
or....
Pose of the Week: Facial Anger
Use your favorite character with full facial controls and pose out the angriest facial expression you can! The shot should be a close-up or extreme close up so we can only see his face.
Something like that. I know a lot of us are working full-time and/or in school so the big challenges are well...a challenge to complete! We don't need to give out prizes or anything but this would most likely be a simple and fun way to improve everyone's posing.
I know posing isn't exactly the most advanced thing and I don't want to it to seem like a "noobie" challenge, but more of just a way for everyone to go back to practice the basics, get ideas from each other for body positions, and hopefully improve their own skills in both posing and giving critiques. Similar to going to a life drawing class, no matter what stage of skill you are in it's always good to go back to the beginning and practice drawing.
