Memory upgrade advice

james120479 20 posts29 Jul 2009I am wanting to upgrade my memory capacity from 4GB to 8GB to try help with rendering and was a little confused as to what i shouold be going for. My motherboard is - Asus P5Q PRO P45 Socket 775 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard which states is compatible with:
4 x DIMM, max. 16GB, DDR2 1200 / 1066 / 800 / 667 MHz, non-ECC, un-buffered memory
I was hoping to get DDR 3 memory but seems that won't be possible with that motherboard. I currently have installed:
Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 XMS2 DHX Performace Memory CL4 2.1V with Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66GHz (FSB 1333 MHz) Socket 775 L2 12MB
Could anyone recommend the best sort of memory i should go for with this setup. I'm assuming the higher Mhz the better, is it possible to buy in 4GB sticks or only 2GB, i can only seem to find 2GB sticks

12 Sep 2009is you chip (CPU) 64 bit compatiable? if so then you will need a 64 bit OP. then your machine will see all the ram you throw at it. if its 32 no need to put more then 3 gig's after you edit your inf file. it will not see moore then that.

Jonathan 480 posts01 Feb 2010From what I've seen, with that motherboard, you'll need DDR2 RAM. For this, I'd be thankful, as DDR3 is still a bit more expensive.
RAM is sold in sticks of 4gb, but it isn't the cheapest for sure ($400 and greater for a 16gb set).

And as mentioned by Kilroy, you'll need a 64-bit OS, which I'm assuming you're already using. -
Silicon 8 posts26 Jun 2010Not sure what OS you have but windows xp only allows or uses 3 or 4 GB of ram.
vista or windows 7 allows what ever you have, and i asume the same for Mac OS
unless you got cash to spend on a new mobo and ram ect id stick with DDR2.
i found some 2x4GB sticks allowing you to have 8GB but its not cheap even though its the Value ram hehe
