Lightning effect in 3DS Max

I thought i give a try and participate in FXWARS challenge. http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread. ... 9&t=734994
The problem is that i have no idea how to generate a lightning effect.
My theory is to make an animated spline with noise effect added on. Then add a glow to spline. I have not tried it out and have no idea how good it will look.
Has anyone got any good tips on how to produce lighting effect in 3dsMax. Similar to this

Gotmilk 228 posts09 Mar 2009been busy with the contest. Here are the animatics. I think i keep it final because of the tight deadline wont allow me to tweak it. Have to move on. If you have any crits and suggestions fire away. I try to push them in.

I was going to say, Digimation use to make a lightning bolt plugin. I don't think they have updated version for max 2008/2009 though...but if you're using an old version, you might try that? Can't remember the name of it...should be listed on digimation's site though

I am looking to get into the saddle of some 3D rendering software (namely 3D Studio Max), and I was wondering what the best published companion would be to this program in order to enhance my use of it. Or if you know some very thorough online tutorials, that would be helpful; however, a book would be preferable.
