I recently heard from a friend that there was a way to key just the position or just the rotation in Max, much the same way you can in Maya. I remember asking people this a while back and they all said they didn't think you could. I was wondering if anyone knew exactly how to do this. I tried setting "Key Position" and "Key Rotation" to a hot key but that just sets it within the curve editor. how do you do it outside of the curve editor? if anyone can help I'd really appreciate it

I don't know if you can do it in autokey mode without the graph editor.
In step key animation there is a button next to the Set Key button called Key filters, click on this and disable/enable the parameters you want keyed.
It would be handy if key filters worked in autokey mode.

Yea it's easy. I have hotkeys set to make keys for position/rotation/scale.
Goto customize--->customize user interface.
In there, find "Key Position", "Key Rotation" and "Key Scale" under "Main UI" and set your keys.
And no, it doesn't just work inside the graph editor. It works anywhere in the viewports.

weird, that's how i set it up and it wasn't working in the viewport, but now it is.
anyway, that takes care of that, just as i read this though i noticed that the curve editor button no longer opens my curve editor. it says it's open, but it's not and now i have to go in through the toolbar to open it. this happened when i was running max9 and i don't remember ever fixing it, i just upgraded. does anyone know how to fix this so the macro works?

Sounds more like a bug to me. Never heard of that problem before.

I am not sure if it is a same thing, but i usually use filter option. Right click on timeslider ---> filter ---> use current transform key. When i animate i select rotate and it sets only key for rotation. I think it does not work in autoplay.
