Pierre: It all starts with a grescale mask image. A streak of paint/blood with a horizontal ramp on it. This then gets a brightness+contrast filter, with the contrast at 100. As you animate the brightness, you see a transition from right to left, as it hits each value range in the image. Just do this twice, one for in, one for out. The ending wipe-away was done by moving a splatter shaped mask that was red, and a copy of itself 2 pixels down-and-over that was black. This whole thing is on top of the text and masked by a rectagle around the text region.
