The DynaTAC Comeback

Postby cozypixel on Sat Aug 15, 2009 3:02 pm

Hey Everyone,

I just completed a substantial pet project I'd like you all to see. It had originally started as maybe a 5-10 second animation to flex my work with photoreal lighting and compositing. Then it kind of expanded into something a lot bigger in the form of a mock phone commercial. From concept to the end of compositing was about a month in my spare time. The audio was done by a talented sound designer by the name of KC Giessen.

We all know how popular the iPhone is these days, but what if we went back to our roots? The Motorola DynaTAC 8000X makes a comeback in this satire spot. I hope you enjoy it.

Haha, Thanks Richard.

Well, it was somewhat reflective. As you can see this "commercial" was kind a heightened version of reality where everything glows and reflects.

Glad you liked it.

WOW

Very very nicely done. I love those all reflecty/splashy commertials.

By the way can you post some scene brakedowns? I cannot figure out how did you do the light and the environment.

Sure,

So all the volumetrics and such was done in after effects with Trapcode Lux and Shine. I used mattes for occlusion and as a base to apply the effects. Find the attached sequence set of photos for the spot lights and the ground lights. Boomer Labs' Max2AE was also of great help as it helped me import cameras and helper objects as Solids in AE. Hope this helps!

mybe that's a personnal thing, but i would have made the phone really mat, and not shiny to really make it contrast against the iphone and the environment.

great stuff anyaway and thx for the screen grabs :)

Loved it, really fun! And awesome to see how much lighting and volumetric you did in AE! Great work!
if it's not fun, what's the point?

Here's my tutorials, if you're into that sort of thing.

@ Richard, Yea, you may be right. In hindsight I was trying to distinguish them both as much as possible while still existing in the same environment. Knocking off some of that reflectivity could have been a positive change. Because damn, it is one ugly phone :) Thanks again for the suggestion.

@ Hype Thanks! I've never had much luck with 3D effects like that in Max. Video Post and Environment Effects are decent but flexibility and real time updates in AE won me over. BTW, I've watched and learned some cool stuff from your tuts. Keep ROCKIN' it!
