Building Generator!

Postby ivanisavich on Sun Sep 20, 2009 8:56 am

edit: BG is now v.15. Grab the new version from the link below.

Hey everyone,

Today I'm releasing Building Generator v.1! This is a tool for 3d Studio Max which generates procedural building objects based on a list of user-controlled settings.

Image

Main Features:

-Wide variety of structural controls.
-Automated detail creation for things like windows, ledges, railings, balconies, etc.
-Ability to generate a series of randomized buildings along a spline path.

I'm still in the process of adding new features and fixing bugs, so if you have a suggestion or a bug report....PLEASE let me know

To download the script click here.

To watch a youtube fly-through video of some buildings generated with the script click here.

For more info, including a pictorial walkthrough of the main parameters and how they affect building generation, click here.

Holy

You dirty little scripting monkey. I thought that T. cannot surprise me anymore and you do it again :D
You are giving a City Engine (http://www.procedural.com) a good run for their money.

Just you wait until guys @ http://digitalurban.blogspot.com/ hear about this thing.
Good job and thank you for sharing the Building Generator with us. I will put it to a good use.

Goodbye Greeble plug-in.

Here is my quickee:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NE_UX1pn670

Awesome stuff.

At first, script didn't worked. :D
Acctualy, when I run the script just nothing happened. I swich betwen max 9 to max 2009, and again nothing happened (no errors either), finaly I realise that must be something with resolution (I run my windows at 1024x768), so I increased resolution to 1280x1024, and then when I run the script, everything was Ok, when I swiched back to 1024x768, everything was Ok.

I know you will fix lot's of things, but anyway, here is some of my suggestions:

- add the minimise button, so we don't start the script over and over again
- add the randomize button for fast building creation
- add a preview button that is interactive (as we change the settings) so we can acctualy see what each option means before creating building
- It would be good if we can stop creation of the building by pressing escape button (when we run the simulation)
- Some material setups as you already mentioned
- it would be great if we could just pick up some plane (with noise modifier for example), amd the script to start randomly scatter the buildings on the plane, or to scater them on vertexs, or based on vertex color (or 3 option that we will choose scatering :D )

This is deserving to be fully commercial product, just add some changes.

You could also think of making the same stuff, but with sci-fi buildings.
Now it's the time to be extreme!

Hey Dark,

Thanks for the comments...nice video too!

I should note that the script has been updated several times since I last posted it yesterday, with a variety of bug fixes and tweaks :) ....so make sure you re-download it from the link in the first post! It's now at version 0.15

Regarding your specific comments:

1) Minimize button has already been added :) You'll see it in v0.15.
2) Yep...will be added in next version
3) Unfortunately this won't be possible due to the way the building algorithm works
4) k...I'll see what I can do
5) Coming soon :)
6) Interesting idea....although for now I'll stick with just path generation....but plane generation could be an option in the future

Cheers!

Wow, awesome! Nice work, Tyson! Makes me wonder what kinds of other things you have in your personal toolbox... :)

When I use this for something, I'll certainly post it!
if it's not fun, what's the point?

I dodn't know about rayfire, but few days a go I've quickly tryed this script with reactor, and it worked great (with havok 1, not havok 3)
There were no coalission (acctualy, there were some, but very minor), and the simulation worked perfectly.
That was just quick test, that was done in 15-20 minutes.
I am too sorry that I don't have some spare time to play and make some more serious tests (destroying buildings in a line), but as soon as I get some, I will try to make something cool, and as I see there is a huge updates every day which is really cool... gotta get it before it become commercional product. :D

Wow T. you did it again. this is really a incredible tool easy to use, fast and very powerful.
i would love to get an insight into the code. it would be cool to know more about the way it works.
you dont have to spoil your code all over but i would like to get the idea how to create something procedural.
