I haven't used character studio in about 5 years....
That being said, assuming your modifier stack is as follows:

You can convert your object to an editable mesh without having to collapse the whole stack. Just stick an edit mesh modifier between the skin and base modifier, then right click on it and collapse it. That'll just merge the 2 bottom modifiers together (edit mesh and editable poly) and convert the base mesh to an editable mesh. That should still maintain your skin weights.
